Blogging In English Or Your Native Language

One of the first questions that comes to mind when starting a blog is; which language I use on my blog – native or English? And of course, there is not right answer. Whether you need to blog in English or your native language entirely depends on:

  • Your language skills
  • Topic of the blog
  • Audience

There are plenty of arguments for and against writing in your native language, and before choosing, you should define your blog’s target audience and the purpose of the blog. If you would like to create a blog solely limited to Danes (if you’re from Denmark) then should you should write in Danish. It makes no sense creating a blog targeting Danes, but writing in English.

Writing in English gives your site a larger traffic potential. When writing in your native language you are automatically dismissing a huge part of potential readers. But of course there is much more competition when writing in English. A blog written in English will not automatically mean that it will generate more traffic that a blog written in a native language. A targeted Danish blog can be just as good.

The question you need to ask yourself is who you want to write for, and what you want to write about.

Be Consistent

One important thing to remember is: be consistent!  Do not create a website with English headlines and native language posts. It's a really bad idea. When selecting a language it is all about search engine optimization. If you have a Danish blog, written in Danish and located in Denmark, it will confuse Google that your headlines are in written in English.

Once your content is written in Danish, then you are obviously trying to attract Danish readers, and an English title and Danish content will send you to the bottom of Google!

Change Your Country In Google Webmaster Tools

Even if your blog is physically located on a server in another country, then you can always "tell" Google which country your website should be construed to be in. It's pretty straight forward, so there is really no reason to explain that. Just google it if you're in doubt on how to do that.

It is also important to do if you write in Danish and has an international domain with .com or .org. So it's a good idea to tell Google via Webmaster Tools that you are actually writing in Danish.
